How To Stop Village Raids In Minecraft 1.14

Minecraft Raids

Minecraft 1.14 is quickly becoming one of my favorite patches. That being said, village raids are starting to get old. The community often times wonders how to stop them. If the raid is already occurring you’re going to have to fight it out, however, what if you can prevent them from happening in the first place?

What Causes A Raid To Start?

A raid can only start if the player has the Bad Omen status effect. If you have this status and walk into any village you will begin a raid event. But we need to determine what causes this status, as well as how long it lasts.

Without the Bad Omen status effect, you won’t be able to start a raid when you approach a village.

How Do I Get The Bad Omen Status Effect?

The Bad Omen status effect can be caused by the following ways.

  1. You kill a patrol captain.
  2. You kill an outpost captain. This only applies to the Java Edition of the game.
  3. All villages are killed or all beds are destroyed during a raid. However, this one only applies if the player is within a village boundary. This also only applies to the Bedrock Version of the game.

The Duration for each stack is 1:40:00 and there can be up to 6 stacks of Bad Omen.

For instance, if a player kills a Patrol Captain you can earn anywhere between 1 & 5 Bad Omen levels. An Outpost captain will always provide only one level.

The Bedrock Edition of the game only receives one level of Bad Omens and slaying multiple captains won’t impact the level.

How Do Bad Omen Levels Impact Raids?

The higher Bad Omen level you have the more difficult the raid is. This, in turn, means that more levels you have the more enemies that spawn. You can also expect to have more difficult enemies sooner if you have a higher Bad Omen level.

Is There Any way To Avoid Raids Even With Bad Omens?

Well, in theory, there is a way but it’s complicated. When a raid event is triggered the game will spawn raid mobs anywhere from 0 to 1024 blocks away from a village. So building a standard wall can certainly help a lot but it isn’t 100% guaranteed to work.

Additionally, the game can only spawn raid mobs on solid ground so if the ground contains lava, or water raid mobs will not spawn on that block. If you’re the creative type you might be able to use this to your advantage. The final tidbit of information I can offer is that raids seem to be calculated based on your render distance.

You could also beef up the village security with the introduction of Iron Golems and if you’re feeling cool Snow Golems!

Closing Thoughts

If you don’t want to get attacked in a raid, don’t do the following.

  1. You kill a patrol captain.
  2. You kill an outpost captain. This only applies to the Java Edition of the game.
  3. All villages are killed or all beds are destroyed during a raid. However, this one only applies if the player is within a village boundary. This also only applies to the Bedrock Version of the game.

If you find you have done one of the above and have the status you can either wait until it wears off and then go to the village. Or you can go and fight your way through a horde of monsters!
