Smite is an enchantment in Minecraft, that is a bit complicated at first as its less straightforward than say fire. However once you incorporate the smite enchantment into your build.

What Does Smite Do?
Smite is an enchantment that boosts your damage against specific enemies. These enemies include skeletons, wither skeletons, zombies, zombie pigmen, the wither, strays, husks, phantoms, zoglins, and the drowned. Effectively any creature defined as undead or unholy by another game’s standards apply here.
The smite enchantment can be added to a sword or axe and has five levels of enchantment.
The effect is active as soon as you hold your weapon in your hand. Keep in mind that the Smite enchantment is not compatible with the sharpness enchantment or bane of arthropods. But other than that if its on a weapon you attack any of the above monsters and you will do more damage.
How Much Extra Damage Does Smite Do?
Smite does more damage based on it’s level it does more damage than either sharpness or bane of arthropods would at the same level (hence why they are not compatible).
Each level of the smite enchantment adds 2.5 * the level of the enchantment plus the base weapon damage.
So, if you have a Gold Sword which has a base damage of 4.
Smite Level 1: 6.5 Damage / Smite Level 2: 9 Damage / Smite Level 3: 11.5 Damage / Smite Level 4: 14 Damage / Smite Level 5: 16.5 Damage.
This means that Smite out damages sharpness against this specific set of enemies.
