45 Billion Coin Stolen From Old School Runescape Player

Old School Runescape

A few months ago an Old School Runescape player posted on Reddit claiming that a serious data breach had caused him to lose 45 billion coins on his main account. Many Redditors claimed that he was simply hacked and that it was his own fault for being lax and not properly securing his account. However, it looks like he was indeed telling the truth, this was an inside job according to Jagex.

“We confirm that a Member of The Old School Team was dismissed from employment at Jagex following gross misuse of moderator privileges,” Jagex said in an announcement posted today. “During our rigorous routine system checks, irregular activity was identified on a small number of accounts, including the movement of wealth and items back into the live game.”

“Following our investigation, we were able to resolve the issue before any significant impact was made to the wider game, or economy. We have also taken steps to return items and GP to any affected accounts. Whilst we generally do not return items or gold, we feel that given this unusual situation, we wanted to ensure no players lost out to the rogue actions of a member of staff.”

The primary issue here is that the 45 billion coins do have real-world value. The moderator who was responsible was none other than Jed Sanderson who in our post yesterday, was fired for abusing his moderator powers in the game. In fact, a deeper investigation by Jagex found that Jed Sanderson stole 100 billion coins in total which is worth roughly $100,000 on various coin selling websites.

Mazrim_lol the player who originally reported the issue and was ridiculed for speaking our shared an image shown below of Jagex Player’s Support response to the issue.

In a followup reddit post, he also stated: “All the redditors who spent ages telling me I was just lax with security can suck a fat one”.
