Sony’s Playstation VR is a virtual reality headset for the Playstation 4. According to the Verge, it just reached a new sales milestone and sold over 1 million units.
This is up from 915,000 in February, according to a press release from Sony. The Playstation VR, released in October 2016, is ahead of direct competitors, like Oculus Rift. However, it is still well-behind Samsung’s Gear VR, which has sold 5 million units worldwide.
CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America, Shawn Layden, says “it’s just a million units, there is still a lot of work to be done.” The number of PS4 owners is approaching 60 million.
During Christmas 2016, you would have been hard-pressed to find a Playstation VR. Supply was limited and therefore Sony decided to cut back on their promotional efforts. However, for the 2017 holiday season, customers can expect an increased supply, according to Layden.
The focus at E3 2017, will be software for the Playstation VR. It was released with a huge lineup of virtual reality experiences, like Rez Infinite and Thumper, but since then releases have been scarce. A notable highlight is the VR mode for Resident Evil 7.
Layden says that with the recent release of Farpoint and Aim Controller, the lull between launch day is about to end. E3 is supposed to bring new releases as well.
Besides games, Sony is also looking to use it’s Playstation VR platform to bring other experiences to the home. They are currently working on an experience based on Breaking Bad in VR.
Developers are still trying to figure out where VR stands on the cycle platform spectrum. Phones are replaced annually and consoles have a 5-6 year lifespan but where does VR stand? That spectrum is going to determine the lifecycle of VR and what type of products and updates we get.
